Overview
Mogic is a furniture-renting service for college students to design, assemble, and return sustainable (carbon negative) furniture with minimal effort. The goal of this project is to tackle the problem of solid waste, specifically furniture, on college campus by 1) adding values to the recycled/reused items, 2) providing distinctive profits/positive feedback for the user group for more incentives, minimize the effort, time-investment, and 3) minimize labor force involved in the problem. After extensive research on the general problem and previous work, our team defines our problem space as follows: college students need an appealing (convenient, low-cost) way to deal with things they don’t need because repurposing/reusing/recycling used items could bring them monetary and non-monetary (emotional, social) rewards, and current donating and recycling systems require too much effort from them. A complete research and project design report can be found here.

Furniture Units
The modular furniture requires no other toolkits except for the connectors provided in the set. By removing the connectors, users will be able to turn the furniture back into the original pieces that come inside the box.
Countertops are made of bamboo boards and particle boards and are provided in three dimensions. Connectors and other accessories include single head connector, double sided connector, cubic connector, dicephalous connector, and friction set to accommodate different needs.
Packaging Design
The packaging box of Mogic is designed with handle for the convenience of transportation and reduction of mailing fee. On the inside of the package, there are sections with clear labels printed on it. Users can put the furniture pieces in the box according to the printed layout and placement instruction.

3. App Design System
The Mogic app is a platform for Mogic users to design and manage their Mogic items. When users need new furniture items, the app allows them to order pre-designed furniture or make their own designs.

Design Your Own Furniture
The DIY process of the app is as easy as building things in Minecraft. After finishing with their design, users can view the items in AR and get a sense of how they look in their rooms. The rental fee is calculated based on the number of modules used in the items.
Customization is one of the most important processes in the final design of Mogic furnitures. The technique used in Mogic’s customization is lamination. Bamboo boards and particle boards will be laminated based on customer’s choice of color and texture. Customers can select their desired colors and texture on Mogic app and order their customized laminated boards.
Redesign/Return Ordered Items
These two features of Mogic are designed to achieve the sustainability mission of our product to the utmost. Instead of throwing away unwanted furnitures when moving, Mogic users have alternative choices of returning the items to us or redesigning the style of the furniture to fit their new room/house.

Earn Credit by Renting
The credit system serves as an incentive for users to keep their rental items in good condition. Also, users will be charged from their deposits for damaged modules. On the “Me” page, users can see their current credits, credit history, and the carbon emission they saved by choosing Mogic over purchasing furniture. By showing users how much money they have saved for the future generations, we hope that users will be more inclined to use Mogic products in the future.
